The second edition of the all-women cast Ramleela performance was organized on 7 August at Mata Gauri by the Embassy and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC), in collaboration with the Surinamese Indian Women Association (SIWA) and the Mata Gauri Foundation. The event commemorated India’s 80th Independence Day, Heritage Month in Suriname, and the Golden Jubilee of diplomatic relations between India and Suriname.
The performance attracted an audience of approximately 500 attendees, including the Chief Guest, Mr. Ashwin Adhin, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and friends of India. The audience expressed their deep appreciation for the artists’ outstanding performance with a standing ovation.
The programme commenced with the traditional lamp-lighting ceremony and Manglacharan. In their remarks, the Chief Guest, Amb. Subhash Gupta and the Chairperson of SIWA highlighted the enduring relevance and timeless appeal of the Ramleela tradition, as well as the ideals embodied by Lord Rama, which were carried to the Caribbean by Indian indentured immigrants and continue to inspire generations across the region.
