PRESS RELEASE

Subject: Barbados and India Strengthen Health Cooperation through MoU on Indian Pharmacopoeia

In a step toward enhancing pharmaceutical standards and bilateral health collaboration, the Hon'ble Minister of Health and Wellness of Barbados, H.E. Senator the Honourable Lisa Cummins, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Republic of India. The MoU was countersigned by H.E. Subhash Prasad Gupta, High Commissioner of India to Barbados, on behalf of the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) during the signing ceremony organized by the Government of Barbados on 27 February 2026.

This MoU underscores both nations' commitment to advancing public health through shared expertise and regulatory alignment—as part of India's broader commitment to CARICOM in extending health cooperation, alongside several initiatives proposed by the Hon'ble Prime Minister H.E. Shri Narendra Modi.

Barbados' recognition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia will streamline importation, quality assurance, and registration of Indian pharmaceutical products, facilitating access to affordable, high-quality generic medicines. The signing of this MoU further presents an opportunity to replicate India's Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP)-like scheme in Barbados, providing affordable medicines to the people of the country through dedicated outlets. This initiative aligns with the Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—"the world is one family"—fostering global unity in health and well-being.
