General Information on OCI

Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) 

Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) Scheme was introduced by the Government of India through an amendment to the Citizenship Act, 1955 in August 2005. Effective July 8, 2026, the Government of India has introduced a fully digital e-OCI system. Under this system, all new OCI applicants will receive a secure digital e-OCI Card instead of a physical paper booklet.

1. Eligibility & Restrictions

Eligibility

The OCI Scheme provides for the registration as an OCI Cardholder of eligible Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) who: 

  • Were citizens of India on or after January 26, 1950.
  • Were eligible to become citizens of India on January 26, 1950.
  • Belonged to a territory that became part of India after August 15, 1947.

Ineligibility: A person who is or has ever been a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh, or of such other country as may be specified by the Government of India, is not eligible for registration as an OCI Cardholder.

Absolute Restrictions (What an OCI is NOT Entitled to)

OCI should not be misconstrued as dual citizenship. To maintain the strict distinction between citizenship and residency, OCI Cardholders are not entitled to: 

  • Vote in elections in India.
  • Contest elections or become a Member of Parliament, a State Legislative Assembly, or a Legislative Council.
  • Hold constitutional offices such as the President, Vice-President, Governor, Judge of the Supreme Court or a High Court, or other constitutional offices.
  • Hold regular employment in the Government of India, except where specifically permitted under applicable rules.
  • Purchase agricultural land, plantation properties, or farmhouses, unless specifically permitted under applicable laws.

2. Benefits of an OCI / e-OCI Card

Registered OCI/e-OCI cardholders enjoy lifelong benefits and privileges in India, including:

  • Visa-Free Travel:A multiple-entry, multipurpose, lifelong visa for visiting India.
  • Indefinite Stay:Exemption from registering with the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) or the Foreigners Registration Officer (FRO) for any length of stay in India.
  • Financial & Economic Parity:Parity with Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in economic, financial, and educational fields. This includes eligibility to purchase non-agricultural immovable property.
  • Academic Opportunities:Eligibility to appear for all-India entrance examinations, including NEET, JEE Main, and JEE Advanced.
  • Domestic Services:Simplified access to local banking, PAN cards, and driver's licenses while residing in India.
  • National Parity:Parity with Indian nationals regarding domestic airfares and entry fees to national monuments, museums, and national parks.

3. Prior Special Permission Required

OCI cardholders must obtain prior clearance or permission from the competent authority before undertaking any of the following activities in India: 

  • Research or journalistic activities.
  • Missionary or Tabligh activities.
  • Mountaineering expeditions.
  • Internships or employment in foreign diplomatic missions or foreign government organizations.
  • Travel to Protected, Restricted, or Prohibited Areas (requiring a Protected Area Permit [PAP] or Restricted Area Permit [RAP]).

Applications for special permissions can be submitted through the official portal: www.ociservices.gov.in.

4. Guidelines for Existing Cardholders & Passport Updates

Existing Physical OCI Booklets

  • Existing physical OCI booklets remain fully valid.
  • Cardholders are strongly encouraged to generate, download, and store their digital e-OCI Card on a mobile device.
  • Travel Note:Once you have successfully generated and downloaded your digital e-OCI Card to your mobile device, you are no longer required to carry the physical booklet while traveling.

Elimination of Physical Card Re-issuances

OCI cardholders are no longer required to obtain a new physical OCI booklet upon turning 20 or 50 years of age, or after updating their personal particulars.

The Mandatory 90-Day Passport Update Rule

  • Whenever a new foreign passport is issued, you must upload your updated passport particulars and a recent photo online via the OCI Miscellaneous Services Portal within 90 daysof receiving the new passport.
  • Penalty Notice:Failure to upload your new passport details within this 90-day window will result in an automated late fee.

5. Step-by-Step Online Procedures

All miscellaneous services must be completed through the official portal.

How to Update Passport or Personal Particulars

  1. Visit the OCI Services Portal at gov.in.
  2. Click on 'Online Registration'and select 'OCI Miscellaneous Services'.
  3. Authenticate your profile using your last linked passport number, OCI Card number, and Date of Birth.
  4. Select the required service (e.g., Passport Particulars Updation, Personal Particulars Updation, or Address/Occupation Updation).
  5. Complete the application form, upload the required supporting documents, and submit.
  6. Once approved by the Indian Mission or FRRO, download your new digital card under the 'e-OCI Card'tab on the portal.

What to Do if Your Registered Email is Inaccessible

  1. Register as a new user with your current email address on gov.in.
  2. Log in, navigate to 'Apply Online', and select 'OCI Miscellaneous Services'.
  3. Authenticate your profile using your last linked passport number, OCI card number, and Date of Birth.
  4. Select 'Email ID Updation', upload a copy of your OCI Card in PDF format, and submit the request.

6. Renunciation & Cancellation of OCI

Renunciation of OCI

An OCI Cardholder of full age and capacity may voluntarily renounce his or her OCI registration by making a declaration in the prescribed manner on the OCI Services Portal.

  • Upon registration of this declaration by the Central Government, the person ceases to be an OCI Cardholder.
  • When a person renounces their OCI, every minor childof that person registered as an OCI Cardholder shall also cease to be an OCI Cardholder.

Cancellation of OCI Registration

The Central Government may, by order, cancel OCI registration under Section 7D of the Citizenship Act, 1955 if: 

  1. The registration was obtained by fraud, false representation, or concealment of any material fact.
  2. The cardholder has shown disaffection towards the Constitution of India.
  3. During any war involving India, the cardholder unlawfully traded or communicated with an enemy, or knowingly assisted an enemy.
  4. Within five years of registration, the cardholder has been sentenced to imprisonment for a term of not less than two years.
  5. It is necessary in the interests of the sovereignty, integrity, or security of India, friendly relations with foreign countries, or the general public.
